The cells contains DNA, which is the genetic information for the organism.
• Prokaryotic cells contain “naked” DNA
• Eukaryotic cells contain DNA with protein molecules (histones) attached to wrap around it.
- The genome is all of the genetic information in the organism (e.g. 46 chromosomes in a human diploid cell)
- A gene is a heritable factor that controls a specific characteristic (e.g. eye colour, blood group…)
- An allele is one specific form gene, differing from another alleles by one or two bases and occupying the same locus as other alleles of that gene.
- DNA is a double stranded helix molecule.
• AT, GC
• is part of the all cells
• Chromosomes are made of DNA

Sickle cell anaemia is a genetically inherited disease. It is caused in the DNA.
The mutation occurs in the haemoglobin gene, which means that the haemoglobin contains the incorrect base pair sequence.
In one point the base thymine replaced adenine. This leads to the codon GTG being made instead GAG. Therefore the amino acid Glutamic acid is replaced by valine. This one incorrect amino acid in the sequence leads to the haemoglobin being formed incorrectly. The changed haemoglobin alters the erythrocycle (red blood cell) shape from a bi-concave disc to a sickle shape.
What is a genetically inherited disease?
Increase in the number of chromosomes or chromosomal Translocations are due to alterations in the structure of the chromosomes, chromosomal deletion or loss. Some important types of chromosomal diseases can be detected on microscopic examination.
What are the symptoms of Sickle Cell Anaemia?
People with sickle cell anemia may also have complications caused by circulatory problems, as well as difficulties in the fight against infections. For example, they have an increased risk of suffering from certain infections, as well as stroke and a disorder called acute chest syndrome, caused by inflammation of the lung tissue as a result of the red blood cells trapped in the lungs.
3. Anemia is defined as a low concentration of hemoglobin in the blood and is not hereditary. Sickle cell anemia is a disease of the blood of hereditary origin primarily affecting persons who have ancestors of blacks, although it also occurs in other ethnic groups, including persons who have ancestors of Mediterranean origin or East half.

Theoretical Genetics:
• Genotype: The alleles of an organism for a characteristic.
• Phenotype: The physical characteristic determined by the genotype.
• Alleles: Different version of the same gene.
• Dominant allele: An allele that is always expressed and has the same effect on the phenotype whether it is present in the homozygous dominant or heterozygous genotype.
• Recessive allele: An allele that is only expressed as the phenotype when present there is a homozygous recessive genotype.
• Monohybrid cross:
17.4.12
• Recombinant: A new genotype produced that will be different to either parent
Parent A Parent B
RR rr
Gametes R r
F1 Generation Rr
• Gender determination: Chromosome pair 1-22 are the autosomes. These are the same in males and females. Chromosome pair 23 are the sex chromosomes. Females are XX (ovarian cells) and males XY (testicular cells)
Female Male
XX (ovarian cells) XY (testicular cells)
Gametes X XY
F1 Generation XX - XY
At the time of fertilisation there is an equal chance 1:1 or 50%:50% that the embryo will develop to be a female or male.
The actual ratio of males and females is 1:1•4. This is because women generally have a higher life expectancy, and they are affected less by genetically inherited diseases.
• Multiple alleles: There are some characteristics that are determined by more than two alleles eg… Blood Group.
The alleles for blood group are co-dominant.
• Possible genotype in humans:
Group A IA IA (AA) or IAi (AO)
Group B IB IB (BB) or IBi (BO)
Group AB IA IB
Group O ii
19.4.12
• 1. A woman has a blood group of B. What are her possible genotypes?
o IB IB (BB) or IBi (BO)
• 2. If her partner is a group of O blood, what genotypes could their children have?
Sex linkage:
• There are some genes that are called sex linked genes because they are positioned in the 23rd chromosome – the set chromosomes.
• Sex linked conditions are represented as XX or XY to show gender and then superscript letter to show the dominant and recessive genotype.
• A male without haemophilia reproduces a females that is a carrier for the condition. What is the chance that their children have toe condition?
